A polydioxanone (PDO) thread lift is a treatment that involves a dissolvable suture to lift and tighten your skin. Sutures are sterile surgical stitches used to repair cuts and incisions. The suture used in a PDO thread lift is made of biodegradable polyester.
PDO thread lifts are used to rejuvenate your skin for a more youthful appearance. It is less invasive than traditional facelift surgeries, and can be performed in under an hour. The procedure does not require patients to go under a scalpel.
Since they are minimally invasive, PDO thread lifts have a much lower risk of complications compared to other facelift surgeries that require more intense surgery. There is less risk of bleeding, scarring, and bruising. They also require minimal downtime, so patients are able to return to their daily lives immediately after the procedure.
PDO thread lifts use colorless polyester sutures that are added into the skin. These sutures trigger certain cells in your body, known as fibroblasts, which produce more collagen. This is the protein that provides your skin with a smoother-looking appearance, as well as structure and elasticity.
PDO thread lifts can be divided into three categories:
PDO thread lifts are used to treat parts of your face that are undergoing signs of aging. The most common areas to be treated are the areas surrounding the cheeks, eyes, jaw, chin, and neck. It could also be used to treat the lips and nasolabial folds.
PDO thread lifts do not produce results as drastic as other facelift surgeries that require more surgery. Because of this, PDO thread lifts are usually used in conjunction with other anti-aging treatments, such as dermal fillers, neuromodulators, or carbon laser peels.
A : Potential risks of PDO thread lifts include minor pain and bruising, infections, broken threads, inflammation, and visible sutures for those with thinner skin.
A : Patients can typically expect to see improvements in their skin sagging almost immediately after the treatment.
A : Patients have experienced results that last from anywhere between 1 to 5 years. While younger people have noticed results lasting 3 to 4 years, older people with poor skin elasticity have reported only seeing improvements for 1 to 2 years.
A : Prior to getting a PDO thread lift, you will need to avoid alcohol and tobacco at least 5 days before receiving treatment. You will also need to avoid anything that may increase the risk of bruising or bleeding, such as aspirin, Advil, ibuprofen, omega-3 fatty acids, and green tea.
A : Other types of sutures used in thread lift procedures include polylactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCA). These threads are newer than PDO thread lifts, they last longer in your skin, and they stimulate more collagen in the body. Compared to PDO, these threads are both better at lifting the sagging parts of your skin.
